Little scare on the porch

Today I had scheduled a pick up from a local thrift store.  Since we updated out closet I thought that it was a good time to go through all my clothes and get rid of what I don't wear anymore.  I can't believe that I filled up 5 bags full.  So when I came home for lunch this afternoon they had put the receipt on my front door.  As I approached the door a bird flew out of my basket right toward my face and scared me half to death.  It looks like my house finch couple has returned.

This is the basket by the front door.

I went inside and grabbed my camera and took this shot.  One egg so far.  The nest is hard to see so I didn't even know that they had made one.

    1. Yes it was. I was not expecting that at all. I hope that she lays more. The past few years she had hatched three.

    1. My heart was sure racing. House finches do lay pretty little eggs. One year she made the nest in my wreath on the door so we could see the babies.

    1. I am not a screamer but I did have a few choice words. I try not to bother the mother bird too much when she is laying eggs. This is the third year they have come back and the most eggs she has laid was 4 but only 3 birds hatched.

  4. If I were a bird, I'd want to live there, too! Finding an unexpectd bird's nest is supposed to bring lots of good luck.

    1. I hope that it does. This pair of finches have been coming back now for three seasons. This is later than normal so I thought maybe something had happened to them. They are pretty smart to make their nest in our covered porch.

    1. I love to see the baby birds. This one will be hard to see anything and I don't want to upset mama bird too much with trying to get pictures.
