Buffalo checks in the kitchen

I almost have my kitchen done.  I still need to replace the backsplash and I want to add some beadboard and moldings to the island.  I have it painted and my new curtains arrived and they are hung up.  I have never had buffalo check curtains before and it is taking me some time to get used to them.  I think that I made the right choice.

The rug is new as my old round rug was red with gold and purple tones in it. It now has a new home in the formal living room.   I think this one goes well with the curtains and the chairs.   I am not a big fan of plantation shutters but it would be too much work to remove them as every window in our home has them.  Also the trim in the home was restained dark but the windows underneath the shutters is not.  I would have to restain all the windows so I guess they will stay.

So here is how the kitchen looks from the family room.  We also replaced the two pendant lights above the island with a lighted pot rack.  Since these cabinets are smaller than my previous kitchen I needed more storage for my pots and pans.

  1. I really like the pot rack/light above the island. While you are doing it to be practical, I think it looks very French country!

  2. I love your plantation shutters. The new rug goes so, so well with the buffalo check curtains and other black accent pieces. I also spy really cool cutout shelves above the cabinets. Love It!

    1. Thank you. I still have a few more things to do in the kitchen but they will have to wait. I am trying to work in the basement right now since it is still full of boxes.

  5. Great shutters! I have checked curtains in the same colors ...mine are just smaller checks. I had them in my dining room for several years, but replaced them last spring. Not sure that I want to get rid of them though ... classic.

    1. Thank you. I ordered them online with Country Curtains. They have a great selection of curtains. I found one pattern that I like for my dining room but I need 108 inches long and most of their curtains only go to 96 inches.

  9. I think the buffalo check drapes look lovely against the stained shutters. I love plantation shutters and we have them throughout our home, but they are white. The kitchen looks great, and that pot rack really does add a lot of storage.

    1. Thank you Carol. We have the plantation through out our home as well. I wish they were white or a darker color. They just don't go with the trim. The windows underneath are the same color as the shutters. The previous owners stained the trim and the doors in the house dark so I am guessing that the shutter were installed prior to staining. I would prefer white as I like painted trim versus stained. I don't think that I will tackle changing out the trim color and shutters. They will be staying.

  19. I think the buffalo check is perfect. Your kitchen looks amazing and very professionally done. I almost looks like it could be on display somewhere. The buffalo check brings more homeyness to the whole area. It also makes the room cozier. It is good to know, though, if you wanted your kitchen to look more formal, just change the curtains.
