DIY leaf placemats

I saw these in the Grandin Road catalog. They had a set of four for $69.00.  So I am thinking "That is an awful lot of money for those" and my next thought was "I can do that".

So here is how I did mine.  First I bought some green square placemats from Party City for $1.99 each.  You could use rectangle ones but I thought the square would work better for my table since it isn't very large.

Next was to hot glue leaves onto the placemats.  I found some greenery bushes at Hobby Lobby of course they were half off.  The leave had different sizes and shades so I used one size for the first row.

The second row I used a different shade and smaller size.

I put a few smaller ones in the corners to give it a more round shape.  You could stop at this point since a dinner plate would cover the middle of the placemat.  This is what I did.

Here is what they would look like with all the leaves in the middle.

These placemats cost me under $25 to make for the set of four.  That is less than half the cost of the original ones that I found in the catalog.   It only took me a couple of hours to complete them.

  1. Those turned out great! I am so NOT crafty but I think with your simple tutorial even I could make some. I already have tons of leaves that I don't use so I'm one step ahead. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Thanks. The longest part for me was cutting the leaves off and sorting them by sizes. Once that the done the gluing went by fast.

    1. Thank you. I am thinking about doing a garden theme tablescape later on and they will be perfect for it. I also bought two more placemats but didn't have enough leaves to finish them. Next time Hobby Lobby has them on sale I need to buy one more bush.

  9. Oh I love Grandin road and your knockoffs are spot on! This would also be a great way to recycle some old faux plants you may have hanging around the house. So cute and perfect for spring. Thank you so much for sharing at Share Your Style and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    1. I was going to use what I had on hand but I didn't have enough of the same kind. Since the placemats were only $1.99 you could save lots of money if you have enough leaves or even get them from a thrift store.

  10. What a nice knock off! These look so gorgeous, I wonder how it would look made with flower petals?

    1. I think that I saw some that were made of flowers too. I would think that you would want to use large petals as you would use less to cover the placemat.
