Kitchen door update

For over a year now I have not sewn the curtain for my kitchen door.  I am not that good at sewing so I guess I am lucky that I can at least sew a straight line and that's all I needed for this door.

Today when I started this project anything that could go wrong did.  It all started with me not being able to find the power cord to my sewing machine.  We have lived here over two years and this is the first time I used the sewing machine. I looked in the sewing table and the dresser that I use to hold supplies but could not find it.   I finally found it on the bookshelf in the exercise room.  How it got there I don't know.  The next thing to happen was my hubby installed the top curtain rod and when he tried to open the door the finial hit the cornice board and the door would not open all the way.  So needless to say I had to run to Wal-Mart and get a different set.  The other finials were much more ornate than the new ones.  At least I was able to get it sewn without having to pull out the stitches and start all over.  Yes that has happened to me before a few times.  So here it is.

It's not the prettiest thing I have ever done but it served its purpose.  You know, like when you want to get a cookie in the middle of the night and you are naked.  Oh yes, the neighborhood behind our house can see into this door at night when the light is on. Ok, so now on to the ugly part.  I am really embarrassed to show the before picture but here it goes.  Please don't laugh.

Yes it was tacked on at the top of the door with thumbtacks.  What can I say.  I needed a quick remedy at the time and I really don't like to sew.  I still need to make one for the front door and the basement door before company comes for Thanksgiving.  And yes those are jerry-rigged also. Like I said I really don't like to sew and I seem to put things off for a long time when it comes to sewing.  Just like when I bought material for the dining room curtains right after we moved in two years ago and it is still in my craft room closet.  I plan on doing those this winter along with many other projects (hopefully).

  1. Well Jody you should be proud of yourself.. I can't even sew on a button.. I wish I could sew but, it's just not my thing. I always say if I can't glue it I wont do it!

    1. I'm with you. I would rather glue it too. That's how I recovered the cornice boards in the kitchen.

  2. I've tacked sheets, curtain panels, even towels up to block neighbors' views into my windows. People have no idea how much can be seen inside a house at night with just the tinest amount of light showing from the inside --- and often discover the hard way that they have been giving peep shows through their supposed "private" frosted window panes in the bathroom. And yes, what about that midnight raid of the fridge in your undies? Mind you, my undies are more like a 19th century lady's swim suit, but still! The idea of being seen in one's undies - EEK! Or au naturel... hmmmm. Something I think I'd rather not see at all, considering who my neighbors are. I highly recommend to anyone who ever reads this comment that they do a window check around their house at night with the curtains/window coverings (if any) pulled the way you normally would do them. You may be in for some unpleasant surprises and will quickly resort to tacking an opaque material over the window to "blind" the outside world to your inside world, until you can manage something better! I think you did a very nice job on your door curtain and, as an aside, think the "plainer" finials are working better in the space/overall feel of the room than something more ornate. But that's just me.

    1. Our kitchen is at the back of the house and the neighbor to the west cannot see our kitchen at all. The neighbor to the east can see into our kitchen window which we close the blind at night. We back up to a small section of open space that has a walking path so anyone on the path can see in and there are a few houses on the other side of the path that could see in. I am liking the plain finials more and more. Thanks for stopping by.
